This is the story of a special couple and how they inspired me to explore black and white wedding photos more.
The first image of this post is of Kate and Jonnie. I first met Kate in the early days of my photographing weddings. She was the bridesmaid at my friend's wedding, whom I was photographing. She stood out as a strong-minded, organised lady who was going to completely support her friend through her wedding and make sure she had the best day!
A few years ago, I was contacted by Kate to ask me to do something special for her. She had met a great guy (Jonnie) and fallen completely for him. They had a few very happy years together before he started living with an illness that then very sadly became terminal. It was December 2016, and they knew he would unlikely see much of 2017. So they decided to get married and celebrate their deep love for each other. I was entrusted to capture what would be a difficult but also beautiful day.
Over a very short period of time leading up to the wedding and the day itself, I got to know Kate a little better. The other side of Kate that I didn't pick up on at her friend's wedding was this very kind, incredibly compassionate and loving person. I have never shared any images from the day out of respect, but feel now that time has passed, we can celebrate Jonnie and reflect.
The image below sums up how they feel for each other and is almost distilled by being a black and white photo. I don't see a sick person getting married in the photo, but two people in love getting married. As you will know from my other wedding photography, I love colour, especially colour photography. My work will always be in colour, and the majority of it. But something about the black and white wedding photos clears out the clutter and, as I said above, distils the moment further!
As I prepare for 2019, I wanted to engage in a few projects that would help push my work and creativity further. I thought it would be interesting to photograph a wedding completely in black and white. What would it be like to bring that eye to a whole wedding?
So, this year, I would love the opportunity to work with a couple and produce a black-and-white wedding photos story for them. If you are interested, please get in touch here or above, and I would love to talk about your plans and feelings about black-and-white photography.
In the meantime, please take a look and enjoy some black and white wedding photos from the archives.
